September 2009

I am almost finished with my third month as Acton Lions Club President and it has been great!  In July we served hotdogs, hamburgers and soft drinks to raise a substantial amount for our club projects.  The next day we shared funds with Young Life, a Vasquez High School based youth group.  Then in August we shared the pancake breakfast with the Volunteer Sheriffs.  In September we shared the breakfast proceeds and effort with the Blue Shadow Mounted Drill Team Exhibition Troop. Also, during August we enjoyed one of our meetings at Carousel Ranch, where we watched some great kids doing some amazing things.  Then we grabbed some grub to eat while we met.  On the 29th, a few of us tended to the bar at “Heart of the West,” a fundraiser for Carousel Ranch.  Thanks to Tina and Cal Steibal and John McLane for being a Lion in the call of duty.

I must say that the highlight of my year so far was our luau to benefit “Guide Dogs of the Desert.”  Lion Marcia did a phenomenal job putting this together.  She handled everything including putting together a masterful group of volunteers.  If you missed the evening, the entertainment, the friendship and the food, I guarantee that you won’t want to miss the next one.

Most recently we were called to help others to help others.  5 families in the Acton area lost their primary dwellings in the Station Fire.  A spaghetti fundraiser was put on at the Acton Community Club with many people from the area cooking, serving, donating gifts for raffle and entertaining.  Many Lions were there to help.  Mike and Renee Godinez helped at the beverage counter with Frank and Joann Wayland, Sandy Madsen helped with the food and John McLane was doing whatever needed doing.  Of course, Cari McLane worked the raffle tickets.  I was extremely proud to present such a substantial check; thanks to the generosity of LCIF, district 4L-1 and our very giving Acton Lions and their friends.

Greetings!

It is with great honor that I serve as president of our club for the year of 2009-2010.  I am working with a great board of directors, each of whom brings a special gift to the club.

Our installation meeting was attended by many guests and spirit filled the air.  We always have a roar of a time at Shambala Wild Animal Reserve. If you missed our installation, you are welcome to join us at any of our meetings.  Please call in advance to make sure we have a meal for you and that we are not at a special location.  We meet on the first and 3rd Wednesday of each month at the Acton Community Club. Please check out our newsletter on this website for details including the phone number of our membership chair Tina Steibal if you would like to attend a meeting.

If you are looking for a club that excels in community service you are in the right place.
