23 May 2010 The Acton Lions really clean up good!
On May 23, a group from Acton Lions Club met to fill their tummies in preparation for a good solid clean up. Then we headed out into the trenches, or gutters, to beautify our roadsides. We meet 3 times per year to clean the areas in our community from the litter distributed by guests of the area, an occasional escape from the garbage truck and the wind promoted escape from the bins behind local stores. Regardless of where it comes from, we know where it’s going. It’s going to the dump. This is just one of the many things that we do as Lions.

We also collect pop tops from cans. They can be from soda cans, dog food cans and even people food cans. It doesn’t seem productive- but it really is. Across the country, Lions collect them and give them to the distribution centers for Ronald MacDonald House. Ronald MacDonald House provides housing for the families of children undergoing hospital treatments. When gathered together they add up to mega-bucks worth of aluminum. So, if you know an Acton Lion you can give them your tops. We will see that they go to the right place.

Another charity that the Acton Lions Club gives to is LCIF. Lions Club International Foundation is a charitable foundation that 100% of all money raised goes to causes such as: the earthquake victims of Haiti and research projects for vision, diabetes and numerous other health related issues.

We also are a collection site for the City of Hope. If you would like to donate to the City of Hope through the Acton Lions Club, you can write the check to the City of Hope and we will see that it gets there. The City of Hope committee chair for our district will make sure you get a receipt and that we get credit for the donation.

You may also donate through the Lions, to “Guide Dogs of the Desert,” an organization that breeds and trains guide dogs for the vision impaired and “Canine Companion,” which breeds and trains
dogs for people with disabilities. Both of these groups are non-profit 501-C (3) organizations. I am the committee chair for Guide Dogs of the Desert and I am a trained ambassador for them.

Of course everyone knows that we also prepare breakfasts the first Sunday of each month for the youth of our community to serve. Half of the profit from our breakfast goes to the group that serves the food.

And this year we will be honoring 4 students with $1000 scholarships for the school of their choice.

If you would like to come to a meeting and see what we are about, please call: 661-305-2235. We would love to have you visit. Also, if you would like to donate to one of the charities that we support you may call and make arrangements for a pick up or drop off. Thanks for your consideration in our efforts to make the world, and Acton and Agua Dulce, a better place.

May 30,2009 Acton Lions Club Poker Run Is a Good Bet

By Lion Tina Stiebel, Poker Run Committe Chair

The Acton Lions Club Poker Run, held Saturday, May 30th, was met with perfect weather.  It was a great ride beginning at the Acton Community
Club, then on to  Vincenzo’s in Agua Dulce, the former Big Oaks Lodge in
Bouquet Canyon, then to Crazy Otto’s in Leona Valley,  then back to Vincent Hill Station, and ending at the Community Club.

Jennifer Jordan won the best (or first place) poker hand; Lion Michael Godinez won second place; Martin Larsen won third place.

Members of the Acton Lions Club set a goal of “Supporting our Youth” in hopes of reaching out and making a difference in helping to support our community’s youth.   The Blue Shadows Mounted Drill Team, Acton-Agua Dulce Young Life, and Vasquez High School Cheer assisted the Lions' efforts by selling raffle tickets for the 50/50 cash prize, and for the shopping spree, won by Realtor Tacia Beshshears.

There were 100 supporters who deserve our thanks, as do the community businesses and Lions Club members who donated to our silent aution baskets, and who donated all their hard work in making the day as successful as it was.

DJ Chris Anderson provided music for the day, and vocals were performed by the lovely B-Sharp Girls.  A special thanks to our vendors-Cookie Lee Jewelry, Aye Chihuahau, Minka-Dink, Scentsy, and Acton Market- and Kathlenn Larsen for her printing and design, and everyone who came out to support the Lions Club Poker Run fundraiser.  Thanks also to Lions Club member Bill Newyear who has raised over $500, through sunglasses sales efforts, for the Lions Club Blindness Prevention program.

April 5, 2009 April Pancake Breakfast
Wow... We were busy! We cooked, and Troopers of the Junior Advanced Troop of the Blue Shadows Mounted Drill Team served, over 250 breakfasts of either burritos or pancakes with scrambled eggs, sausages, hash browns, and beverages to a lot of hungry folks, Sunday morning (8-ll am), April 5, 2009 as a fund-raiser for our groups. The Troopers “had a blast”, said the Regimental Commander of Blue Shadows, Nancy Chefalo.  Colonel Chefalo said their share of the money helps fund the Junior Advanced Team who travel to Ceres, CA and Reno, NV for drill team competitions. For more about the Junior Advanced Troop of the Blue Shadows Mounted Drill Team, goto: http://www.freewebs.com/jatteam/

We also offered sunglasses for sale as well.

We do this the first Sunday of the months March through October of each year.
